L

L72 --

While available in fullsize Chevys and the Corvette, the 425hp version of the iron-block 427ci Chevrolet big-block V-8 was most notoriously used in the COPO 9561 ’69 Camaros sold by Yenko Chevrolet.

L79 Nova --

At the time, the ’66 model of the Chevy II was considered Chevy’s most powerful small car until the birth of the Camaro the following year. The L79 Nova was powered by the 350hp version of the 327 small-block V-8.

L88 --

While the L88 was deemed Chevy’s ultimate big-block 427 by some, the truth of the matter was that at 4430hp, the L88 was greatly underrated in the few Corvettes into which it was installed.

L.T. --

An English term for “Low Tension” in regards to the relationship between battery voltage and ignition components.

Larry Shinoda --

The famed designer for GM and then later Ford. Larry Shinoda’s work included the ’63 Corvette and the graphics packages for the Boss 302 Mustang and the Cougar Eliminator.

Limited Slip Differential --

A differential capable of overcoming the normal actions of a differential in such a way as to apply most of the available torque to the most loaded wheel.

Linkage --

A link or system of links that convey mechanical force from one location to another. These links include cables, rods, etc.

Lip-Type Rear Spoiler --

An aerodynamic device capable of generating downforce from air flowing over a single surface that creates powerful depression away from the other direction of motion.

Lobe Center --

In terms of the angular position of a camshaft, that point in rotation at which the lift of an associated tappet is greatest.

Locked Differential --

A variation of the limited slip differential allowing the two driven wheels to experience no slippage under virtually any conditions.

LS6 --

A 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 that had LS6 upgrades capable of boosting the horsepower of the 454 under the hood to 450 horsepower.

LT-1 --

A Chevrolet small-block of the 1970s

Lubricant --

A substance used to reduce friction between components moving against each other and thus promote durability.

Luggage Compartment --

The rear region of a car which is designated as the space intended for carrying luggage. Also commonly referred to as the trunk.
